Summary:

The sun was out. The wind blew steady throughout the entire race. If we had had a few more boats it would have been a perfect afternoon. Nine boats came to the line, started at their appointed times and headed for the DD mark, rounded it, hoisted chutes for the run to the Santa Monica bell buoy, doused for the reach to the 2ES buoy and then turned for the final leg back to the finish. Since this was an inverted start, the early starters spent most of the day looking backwards, watching the later starting boats gradually close on them. Chuck Spear’s Twelve Bar Blues was the last to start, passed Banzai, which had started ninety seconds earlier, on the first leg and then gradually reeled in most of the rest of the fleet by the 2ES rounding. Only Sunshine, sailing singlehanded and starting first, remained ahead in the final leg of the race. Lenny Gordon, the skipper of Sunshine, held on valiantly but could not sprint with Twelve Bar Blues to the finish. Avet, a J80 and a newcomer to the fleet, made an impressive move in the final leg, hoisting its large asymmetrical spinnaker on a tight reach in an attempt to close the gap but was not able to do so.
